Expressive flexibility.

چکیده
Previous research has examined the consequences of either expressing or suppressing emotion using between-subjects designs. However, emotion theorists have argued that adaptation depends not so much on one regulatory process but rather on the ability to flexibly regulate emotion in accord with situational demands. To test this idea, Bonanno, Papa, Lalande, Westphal, and Coifman (2004) developed a within-subjects experimental paradigm to measure expressive flexibility (EF) and showed that EF predicted better self-reported adjustment over a 2-year period. The current investigation extends this research by (1) demonstrating the stability of EF across a 3-year period, (2) replicating the association between EF and positive adjustment using a more objective measure of adjustment (obtained from participants' close friends rather than based on self-report), and (3) by showing that the positive relation between EF and adjustment was particularly salient in the context of high levels of cumulative life stress when EF was measured under conditions of immediate threat (presence of a subliminal threat prime).

Expressive flexibility in combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder and depression.
BACKGROUND A growing body of evidence suggests that the ability to flexibly express and suppress emotions ("expressive flexibility") supports successful adaptation to trauma and loss. However, studies have yet to examine whether individuals that meet criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression exhibit alterations in expressive flexibility. The present study aims to test whet...
متن کاملAffective Flexibility: Relations to Expressive Flexibility, Feedback, and Depression
Theory and research on emotion regulation have shifted from emphasizing the adaptiveness of specific strategies to flexible regulation. Studies on the modulation of emotional expression, or expressive flexibility (EF), have demonstrated a close link between flexibility and psychological adjustment. The present study extended this line of research to the modulation of subjective emotional experi...
متن کاملComplicated grief and deficits in emotional expressive flexibility.
There is growing evidence that deficits in emotion regulation may be at the heart of maladaptive reactions after bereavement. Expressive flexibility, or the ability to flexibly enhance or suppress emotional expression, appears to be especially important for adjustment in the aftermath of highly aversive events (Bonanno, Papa, Lalande, Westphal, & Coifman, 2004). In this study, we compared expre...
متن کاملPsychological Assessment Measuring Ability to Enhance and Suppress Emotional Expression: The Flexible Regulation of Emotional Expression (FREE) Scale
Flexibility in self-regulatory behaviors has proved to be an important quality for adjusting to stressful life events and requires individuals to have a diverse repertoire of emotion regulation abilities. However, the most commonly used emotion regulation questionnaires assess frequency of behavior rather than ability, with little evidence linking these measures to observable capacity to enact ...
متن کاملIssues for Designing a flexible expressive audiovisual system for real-time performance & composition
This paper begins by evaluating various systems in terms of factors for building interactive audiovisual environments. The main issues for flexibility and expressiveness in the generation of dynamic sounds and images are then isolated. The design and development of an audiovisual system prototype is described at the end.
متن کاملExpressive Flexibility of a Constraint-Oriented Notation
We illustrate the expressive #exibility of the `co-notation', a declarative, structured, constraintoriented speci"cation technique for concurrent systems where constraints on actions and on data variables are intertwined. Flexibility is intended here as the ability to closely match the structure of the initial, informal behavioural description of the system, and to directly formalize the concep...
